Snaggletooth Shark Information and Facts

As their name suggests, the snaggletooth shark (Hemipristis Elongatus) features teeth on both the upper and lower jaw which protrude outward and give it a “snaggletooth” appearance. The snaggletooth shark is a species of weasel shark that’s found only in the warm, shallow coastal waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Some of the most common areas inhabited by them are the coasts of Australia, eastern Africa, the Philippines, India and China. Although most snaggletooth sharks prefer to stay in shallow waters of less than 100 feet, they occasionally venture into deeper waters (as you can see in the video below).

Unfortunately, commercial and recreational fishing has taken a toll on the snaggletooth shark population, placing them in danger of becoming extinct. In many Asian countries including China, Korea and Japan, Thailand and Pakistan, snaggletooth sharks are sold in open fish markets for their meat, fins and organs.

Like most types of sharks, the snaggletooth feeds on a variety of aquatic prey, such as fish, crustaceans, birds and even other sharks. In all of the years of their recorded existence, there have been no cases of snaggletooth attacks on humans.

Collecting Snaggletooth Shark Teeth

Snaggletooth shark teeth are a prized possession among collectors. There are a couple of reasons for this, one of which is their rarity. As stated above, snaggletooth sharks are on the verge of extinction. As a result of their rarity, collectors seek to own their teeth. Another reason why snaggletooth shark teeth are popular is because of their physical characteristics. If you look at one up close, you will see how sharp and defined the serrations are. These serrated teeth are used by the snaggletooth shark for ripping in and devouring their prey.

If you want to get your hands on a snaggletooth shark tooth, you are probably going to have to purchase them from dealers or other collectors. While they are occasionally found on beaches, most of them are found embedded in sedimentary rocks. Florida’s Bone Valley is one such location where hundreds of near-perfect snaggletooth shark teeth have been discovered.

Video of a Diver Encountering a Snaggletooth Shark

Because of their low population numbers, the snaggletooth shark is extremely rare to encounter in open waters. With that said, the divers in the video above were lucky enough to encounter a beautiful snaggletooth shark swimming among them. According to the description, the divers were around 100m depth when they spotted the shark. Thankfully, they had an underwater video camera present and were able to capture it on film. This is one of the only video footage available of the snaggletooth shark.
