Cow Shark Information and Characteristics
Cow sharks (family Hexanchidae) are a group of sharks that live in deep waters of the North Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. Because of their preference towards deep waters, few people ever get a chance to observe these beautiful creatures except when scuba diving. Cow sharks are docile and typically pose no threat to divers when encountered, so don’t be alarmed if you see one on a diving trip. As with any shark, though, you’ll want to avoid direct contact with any cow sharks you happen to encounter in the wild.
Different Types of Cow Sharks:
- Heptranchias perlo (Sharpnose sevengill shark)
- Notorynchus cepedianus (Broadnose sevengill shark)
- Hexanchus griseus (Bluenose sixgill shark)
- Hexanchus nakamurai
One of the most notable features of the cow shark is their unusually high amount of gill slots. Most sharks only have 5, but cow sharks have either 6 or 7 depending on the genera. As you may already know, these gill slots are necessary for sharks to live and breathe underwater. When they open their mouth, water flows in and passes through the gill slots where filaments absorb oxygen before exiting. Not long ago, marine biologists assumed that all sharks must be moving in order to breathe underwater, although we now know this isn’t the case. Sharks can breathe by opening and closing their mouths, forcing water to travel through their gills.
A full-grown adult cow shark can reach lengths of 20 feet long, although most only grow up to 12 feet. Like most shark species, females are typically slightly longer and larger than male cow sharks.
Scientists consider cow sharks to be the single most primitive type of living shark because their skeletons have changed very little over millions of years. While evolution has played a key role in shaping the physical characteristics of most shark species, it has done very little to the cow shark. Marine biologists are able to determine this by comparing fossilized remains from prehistoric cow shark to the ones roaming Earth’s oceans today.
Cow sharks are typically slow simmers that kind of chug along the ocean floor (look at the video below for an example). With that said, they’re still able to catch relatively large fish and even birds on the surface when they’re hunting. Some cow sharks have been known to attack and feed on other sharks as well.
