Interesting Facts About The Megalodon

Megalodon Shark

In terms of size, the now-extinct megalodon is the largest shark to have ever lived on this planet. Scientists estimate it measured around 50 to 60 feet long, compared to great white sharks which measure only 22 feet. While the megalodon is a sizable amount larger than the great white, there are many similarities between the two, leading many to believe that the two are closely related.

The word megalodon comes from the Greek language meaning “big tooth“, and if you’ve ever seen a megalodon tooth, you’ll know why it was named this. On average, the size of a Megalodon tooth can reach lengths of over 7 inches! When you compare that to a great white tooth, which is only 3 inches long, you’ll notice that it’s pretty impressive!

During its reign on this earth, the megalodon was the ultimate predator of the seas, feeding on whales and other large prehistoric marine life. Being that the megalodon was so large, scientists believe it had to consume around 2,500 pounds of food a day to sustain its growth.

Like all sharks, m didn’t have any bones in their body. Instead, their bodies consisted mostly of lightweight, flexible cartilage which allowed them to heal from injuries faster and swim with greater agility. However, the spine, jaws, and facial skeleton of the megalodon were made of calcium-fortified cartilage, making it stronger and more durable.

Megalodon Feeding Habits

  • Scientists believe the megalodon consumed over a ton of food each day.
  • The megalodon had nearly 300 large, serrated teeth which it used to consume its prey.
  • In addition to eating large fish, megalodons also consumed whales and even other sharks.
  • Many scientists believe starvation played a key role in the megalodon’s extinction. When global climate change brought on the ice age roughly 1.5 million years ago, whales and other major food sources of the megalodon disappeared.

Megalodon Teeth

Megalodon Tooth

One of the most impressive features of the megalodon is the enormous teeth they possessed. Reaching lengths over 7 inches long, these teeth were so large that up until the mid-1600s, many people believed they were the tongues of ancient dragons.

When you compare a great white tooth to a megalodon’s, you’ll notice they are very similar in appearance. Both teeth have a prominent dark-shaded triangular area near the root. However, the teeth from a megalodon typically have many more serrated edges than a great white’s teeth. These serrated edges act like a sawblade which the megalodon used to deliver fatal blows as they tore into their prey.

Like all shark teeth, the color of megalodon teeth is usually determined by the sediments on the ocean floor. When a megalodon lost one of its over two hundred teeth, it would fall to the ocean floor and become fossilized in the sediment below. Over time, some of these teeth wash up on shore where they’re found by beach-goers.

How To Value a Megalodon Tooth

Megalodon teeth can vary greatly in price, from $10 to well over $5,000, which is why it’s important how to value them. One of the most influential factors is the size. Typically, the smaller the tooth, the less value it holds for collectors.

When a tooth is intact and complete with no physical damage, it will be worth a significant amount more. Teeth are valued less if they have noticeable damage or imperfections, such as chipped pieces, surface wear or discoloration.

Another determining factor in accurately valuing a megalodon tooth is from which area of the mouth it came from. Teeth towards the front are larger and sharper since they are used to deliver killing blows, therefore they’re worth more money.
