What is The Carcharocles Auriculatus?
The Carcharocles auriculatus is an extinct shark species that’s closely related to the megalodon. Although scientists predict they’ve been extinct for roughly 50 million years, their fossilized teeth are still being to this day. Like the megalodon, the Carcharocles auriculatus was one of the largest sharks to have ever inhabited Earth’s oceans, feasting on dolphins, whales and large fish.
Taxonomists have classified Carcharocles auriculatus as the first of four genus auriculatus. The species following them are Carcharocles angustidens, Carcharocles chubutensis and finally Carcharocles megalodon. With that said, there’s still some debate as to whether or not the Carcharocles auriculatus is classified in the right genus. Some scientists believe it should be in the Carcharocles genus instead.
Carcharocles Auriculatus Shark Teeth
In terms of appearance, Carcharocles auriculatus teeth look like a cross between a great white and megalodon, which would make sense given their classification. Typically, they are slightly curved towards one side and contain several sharp serrations along the edges. Most Carcharocles auriculatus teeth run smaller than megalodon teeth at roughly 50 to 100 mm.
