Bull Shark

Bull Shark Information

Bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) are notorious for their aggressive behavior and tendency to attack humans. In fact, they are one of the three shark species reported to frequently attack humans unprovoked; the two others are great whites and tiger sharks. So, just how much of a threat are bull sharks to humans? Although bull sharks are responsible for more attacks than any other species, the overall probability of being attacked by one is still extremely low (around 1 in 11.5 million).

A typical bull shark has a stocky body with a short, flat snout, such as the example shown above. As you may have guessed, they get their name from their flat snout and aggressive nature, which is similar to a bull. To see what an actual bull shark looks like, check the image to the right. Pay close attention to its short snout that’s slightly curved upwards. Along with their short fins and stocky body, it’s easy to see where this shark gets its name from.

When fully grown, bull sharks are roughly 7 to 8 feet in length and weigh around 250 to 400 pounds. Female bull sharks (cows) are generally slightly longer and heavier than males. The largest bull shark on record tipped the scales with an impressive 690 pounds; however, it’s believed that larger specimens have been observed but not recorded.

Fast Facts About Bull Shark

  • A pregnant bull shark may give birth to anywhere between 1 and 12 pups.
  • Bull sharks prefer to stay inside the warm shallow coastal waters where prey is readily available. Unfortunately, this is a contributing factor to the number of reported attacks on humans.
  • The 1916 Jersey Shore attacks from a bull shark are believed to have inspired the “Jaws” novel.
  • Bull sharks are known to swim into freshwater inlets and canals.
  • Scientists believe they’re capable of inhabiting freshwater because of their innate ability to recycle the salt water within their bodies.
  • Bull sharks will use their flat snout to ram into their prey, temporarily stunning them.
  • Because of their aggressive nature, bull sharks are known as the “pitbulls of the sea.”
  • Humans remain the greatest threat to this species due to residential and commercial fishing.
  • Bull sharks are extremely fast and are believed to reach speeds of 40 to 50 mph.
  • At 1,300 pounds, the bite force of a bull shark is stronger than any other species.

Bull Shark Teeth

Are you thinking about going hunting for shark teeth on the beach or in the ocean? If so, you need to know what they look like. They’re a bit smaller and usually shaped differently than teeth from other species of shark. So, what exactly does a bull shark tooth look like? Most are short, wide and triangular-shaped with sharp serrated edges. The very tip of some bull shark teeth bend slightly outwards in a hook-like fashion to help them tear through prey.

When searching for bull shark teeth, you have to keep an eye out for a more solid and not pointy shape. Just as their body is short and stocky, so are their teeth. The trick to finding bull shark teeth, or any shark teeth for that matter, is to look for the colors of fossilized sediments. This usually includes gray, white and black with multiple shades of each. You can click on the previous link for more advice, but the general idea is to scan areas in the surf where shells and other debris wash up. Meticulously scan the area while looking for anything that resembles a shark tooth. Whether it’s from a bull shark or not, finding any shark tooth is a rewarding experience that should make you proud.

Bull shark teeth are actually quite inexpensive, making them a popular choice among new collectors. Teeth of bull shark are smaller than those of great whites, but they are still considerably larger than several other shark species. Bull shark teeth are typically triangular-shaped with sharp, serrated edges that are used to tear through its prey’s flesh.
