What is Bone Valley?
Bone Valley is a region in Florida that’s filled with heavy amounts of phosphate deposits. Millions of years ago, when Earth consisted of one large continent known as Pangea, large rivers and waterways ran from the inland to the sea, carrying the remains of dead land and sea animals. It’s believed the phosphate deposits were formed by the mixing of animal remains with the natural phosphorus found in the ground. As a result of the many prehistoric fossils found here, geologists have given it the name “Bone Valley” and consider it one of the most important areas in the state.
For over a century, workers have mined the rich phosphate deposits at Bone Valley. As you may already know, traditional garden fertilizer is manufactured using three basic ingredients: calcium, nitrogen and phosphate. Miners have been harvesting the phosphate here to use in the production of fertilizer. Dozens of surface mines are scattered throughout Bone Valley which features large draglines that automatically scoop up the minerals and dump them into a pit where it is mixed with water and sent through a series of pipes to various processing plants. Once the phosphate mixture reaches the plant, it’s sifted to separate the phosphate from the other minerals and mixed with more water to create “wet rock.” Trains and large dump trucks then transport the wet rock to manufacturing plants where it is turned into traditional garden fertilizer.
Geologists believe Florida contains more phosphorus than any other state. But the real eye-opener in Bone Valley isn’t the phosphorus, it’s the fossils. You have to remember that the entire state of Florida, including Bone Valley, was once underwater millions of years ago. All of the megalodons, great whites and other prehistoric aquatic wildlife that died became partially fossilized over time.
The first person responsible for locating prehistoric fossils in Bone Valley was Captain Francis LeBaron of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During the mid to late 1880s, LeBaron discovered a surplus of prehistoric fossils while surveying the Lower Peace River. After collecting some of the samples, he sent a total of nine barrels to the Smithsonian Institution. After receiving these promising samples, the Smithsonian Institution wanted him to return for further excavations, but LeBaron was unable to because of other duties. It wasn’t until 1886 that LeBaron once again ventured back into Boney Valley in search of additional fossils for the Smithsonian Institution.
Advantages of Bone Valley Shark Teeth
Most fossilized shark teeth that fall to the bottom of the ocean’s floor have some form of wear and weathering to them. However, one of the unique advantages of Bone Valley shark teeth is the fact that they’re oftentimes in pristine condition. The phosphate and other miners here have encapsulated and fossilized the remains of a number of prehistoric animals. Miners, excavators and geologists are still uncovering thousands of amazing shark teeth and other finds to this day. Some of the most notable types of shark teeth found in Bone Valley include those from the megalodon, snaggletooth shark (Hemipristis elongatus) and several other now-extinct shark species.
Unfortunately, it’s nearly impossible to uncover Bone Valley shark teeth on your own. This land is now owned and operated by phosphate mining companies, so you need permission to legally excavate it. The good news is that you can still own authentic Bone Valley shark teeth by purchasing some of the specimens listed here on our website. Remember, trespassing is both dangerous and illegal, so don’t take the risk.
Shark teeth and other fossilized specimens found in Bone Valley typically have a light-to-dark grey coloring. This is the result of the phosphorus minerals slowly replacing its normal composition over the course of thousands of years. Many collectors, myself included, prefer the highly stylish appearance of these grey-colored fossils.

This is an excellent video showcasing some prominent shark tooth finds in Bone Valley. As you can see, most of them are in excellent condition, showing very little, if any, wear. Bone Valley is home to one of the largest concentrations of pristine shark teeth. The only downside is that it’s privately owned and off limits to fossil excavation teams.
