Tiger Shark Information

Tiger Shark

The tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) is a requiem shark that gets its name from the dark vertical stripes which line their body and resemble that of a tiger. However, as the tiger shark matures and ages, these stripes begin to fade away.

Tiger sharks live mostly in the warm tropical and subtropical ocean waters throughout the world. Although not much is known regarding their migration behavior, many scientists believe they are attracted and even guided by warm water, which is why their numbers are higher around the equator. As opposed to the bull shark which stays in shallow waters, most tiger sharks prefer deeper depths surrounding reefs. With that said, witnesses have reported tiger shark sightings in waters as shallow as 10 feet.

Unfortunately, tiger sharks are fished throughout the world for their meat and fins. Although they aren’t currently considered endangered, if widespread fining continues, their species may risk extinction. Greenpeace has added the species to their “seafood red list” in an effort to sway some potential buyers of tiger shark meat and fins.

Fast Facts About Tiger Shark

  • Tiger sharks frequently attack humans and are considered the second most dangerous species, only second to the great white.
  • A tiger shark was responsible for the 2003 attack on 13-year-old Bethany Hamilton who lost her arm and went on to become a professional surfer, inspiring the movie “Soul Surfer.”
  • Tiger sharks are one of the largest species in the ocean, reaching lengths of 22 feet and weighing over 1,900 lbs.
  • Tiger sharks are known as the “garbage disposals of the sea.” because of their ability to devour any and everything they come across. Fishermen have found everything from birds to old tires and boat seats in their stomachs.
  • Tiger sharks have a keen eyesight and frequently hunt their prey during the cover of night.
  • A pregnant tiger shark may give birth to as few as 10 pups or as many as 70.
  • Most tiger sharks prefer to travel and hunt alone, except when they’re in search of a mate.

Collecting Tiger Shark Teeth

Tiger shark teeth are some of the most beautiful specimens you’ll ever come across. Although they’re usually quite short, they contain many sharp serrations along the edges, making them desirable to collectors. These serrated teeth are used by the tiger shark to rip into the flesh of their prey during an attack.

It’s oftentimes difficult to distinguish between a bull shark and a tiger shark tooth. They’re both notably shorter and fatter than some of the more stilleto-shaped teeth, such as those from a lemon shark.
